From an article by Kirby Runyon and Alan Stern (principal investigator on the New Horizon's mission.):

plan-et: (plan-it), n. A substellar mass body the has never undergone nuclear fusion and has enough gravitation to be round due to hydrostatic equilibrium, regardless of its orbital parameters.

This is not official, but Alan Stern believes this a more appropriate definition.
