What's most galling is NASA's insistence that astronauts have a STEM degree.

If space is for everyone, then they should ensure everyone has an opportunity to become an astronaut. When H. sapiens are popping offworld, they're not going to have B.S. under their belt. Also space, and beyond, is going to need the humanities.

I can appreciate the need for astronauts to be healthy, if not height-weight proportionate, but beyond that space should be for everyone. Not just nerds with pocket protectors and slide rules.
