Has anybody actually looked at Mars through a scope recently?

Last Wednesday night, 15-August-2018, it was rather hazy and Mars was significantly dimmed by the haze compared to the blazing beacon it had been. Since steady seeing often accompanies haze in the summer, I decided to take a quick look with my 80 mm apo refractor (since it's small and easy to set up).

Around 11:30 pm EDT, +/- 10 minutes, I looked at Mars through the 80 mm with a diagonal and an Explore Scientific 4.7 mm, 82° eyepiece, yielding 102x with a 0.8° true field of view (correct vertically, reversed horizontally).

The seeing was indeed good and I could make out features almost immediately (it didn't require patient watching). The most notable were Syrtis Major, Hellas and the South Polar Cap. Across the southern hemisphere, Mare Tyrrhenium and Mare Serpentis formed an inverted "T" with Syrtis Major.

The bottom line -- it looks like the Martian dust storm is subsiding.

I think that by 1957, nobody really believed that there could be intelligent life on Mars.

Nonetheless, on this date, an episode involving an English-speaking Martian was made for the popular "The Adventures of Superman" TV show. It was probably the worst in the series.
