Is Life Most Likely Around Sun-like Stars?

https://arxiv.org/abs/1710.11134

Quote:
We consider the habitability of Earth-analogs around stars of different masses, which is regulated by the stellar lifetime, stellar wind-induced atmospheric erosion, and biologically active ultraviolet (UV) irradiance. By estimating the timescales associated with each of these items, we show that they collectively impose limits on the habitability of Earth-analogs. We conclude that planets orbiting most M-dwarfs are not likely to host life, and that the highest probability of complex biospheres is for planets around K- and G-type stars. Our analysis suggests that the current existence of life near the Sun is slightly unusual, but not significantly anomalous.

What Happens If China Makes First Contact?

As America has turned away from searching for extraterrestrial intelligence, China has built the world’s largest radio dish for precisely that purpose.

If China's going to use alien contact to best these United States of America, I'm going to call it cheating.

How Big Would an 'Alien Megastructure' Have to Be?

https://www.space.com/38711-how-big-is- ... t=63057352

Quote:
But science-fiction fans want to know — if it was an alien structure, how big would it have to be to create the light-dimming scientists observed? KIC 8462852 is an F-type star, hotter than the sun and about 1,300 light-years away from Earth, where 1 light-year is about 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion kilometers). However, that distance is an estimate, and the star could be as far away as 1,680 light-years and as close as 1,030. The star is about 1.43 times the sun's mass and 1.58 times its diameter — so it's about 1.37 million miles (2.2 million km) across. (To get an idea of how big that is, about the 455 United States, lengthwise, could fit inside this alien megastructure.)

Ancient Fossil Microorganisms Indicate that Life in the Universe Is Common

http://www.astrowatch.net/2017/12/ancie ... icate.html

Quote:
The evidence that a diverse group of organisms had already evolved extremely early in the Earth’s history — combined with scientists’ knowledge of the vast number of stars in the universe and the growing understanding that planets orbit so many of them — strengthens the case for life existing elsewhere in the universe because it would be extremely unlikely that life formed quickly on Earth but did not arise anywhere else.

Why we're probably alone in the universe; this, according to Oxford researchers.

I hate articles with spoiler headlines.

Also it's mathematically improbable that we are the only living beings in the universe.

If Earth is the sole bearer of life, it make the universe far more strange and opens up so many more mysteries as to why there is no other life within a 14 billion light year radius.

By "alone", the authors mean that we are likely the only intelligent beings living in an advanced civilization.
